Are you a student looking for a career who is recruiting a diverse workforce? WVU and other Big East Conference schools have launched a unique career fair site for tudents who are interested in wanting a entry-level or experienced career opportunities and internships with companies who place a high priority on promoting a diverse culture in their workplace. You can log-in to the site, create a profile, and look to apply for jobs and internships that interest you. You can check back weekly to see updated employer profiles also.

You should participate in e-fair because… where else can you receive many employer contacts from your home? This E-Fairs is an excellent chance to submit your resume to a variety of different companies and organizations for various careers and internships. You only need an online resume, internet access and time!

Career Services is hosting two brand new seminars for students at WVU for free! These seminars are taught by career counselors at the Career Services Center.

They will be hosted on Nov. 4th at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the CSC which is located

The first seminar will cover Cover Letters and Thank You Notes. The job search process does not begin and end with a resume. It order to truly set yourself apart from the crowd. It will also impress the future employer. A well written cover letter will round out the interview along with a thank you note.

The second seminar will cover environmentally conscious companies. Some majors are related to maintaining a green environment. The seminar will help you think outside of the box when choosing a career with environmental practices of your future employers.

This is a great opportunity for students to take advantage of. They are free of charge and are hosted by professionals!

Come and check out Career Services new and approved MountaineerTRAK a job search engine.

Students are eligible to set up a log-in name where they can upload their resume and major. Employers are uploaded into the system and can review your resume and information. You can also be sent text updates of when a new job is posted within your major or interests.

Not only can you search for job but also co-ops and internships. This a great and easy opportunity to find a job or internship and start your future. MountaineerTRAK kiosk are set up in the Career Services Center and Mountainlair for your convenience.

Wonderful Wednesdays at Career Services!

Every Wednesday, Career Services hold a seminar of various topics for students. This week is extra special because they are holding two, one with a guest speaker.

Job Search Process: 4 p.m. Many students do have those questions about how, where, when, and why to start. This seminar will be the perfect opportunity for you learn the tips and trick of a successful job search. It will be held in the CSC classroom. Bring a notebook and take good notes to refer back to! Along with your resume and cover letter for it to be reviewed.

How to Get into Med School: 6 p.m. Thinking about taking a career in medicine? If you’re worried about the competition or if you’d like to for a PhD or MD come ask your questions to Dr. Garbutt, a doctor from WVU Hospital. He will review the application process along with the different responsibilities of each career path. Bring a notebook and dress to impress! First impressions are always a plus. Write down any questions along the way so you can get all the information you need!

Seminars are held in the Career Services Center located on top of the Downtown Bookstore.

Is Grad School for ME??

So you may be hitting the end of your undergrad career and you think.. “where do I go from here??” You have many options whether it be to go back home to your parents house, start looking for a job or apply to graduate school. Your undergrad career goes by pretty quick so it is always good to have a game plan so you can start preparing early.

One way you can start preparing early is going to the Career Services Center. They are there and ready to support you whether you want to attend WVU or another school or even if you have no idea exactly what you want to do.

CSC says, “Your graduate education provides you with the flexibility and skills to pursue both academic and expanded options. We are available to help you assess your skills, interests, values, and experiences as you explore programs and careers that might be an ideal match for you.”

Career Services offers career counselors are available to help you through the search and application process. You can call or visit CSC to schedule an appointment with one of these couselors. They will help with resumes, interviews and searching for a job or school. This is a great resource to use!

Take advantage of this FREE opportunity to all students! It can make such a big difference for you to narrow down your options.

Dress to impress is the key to success..

First impressions are a big deal when it comes to meeting a possible employer. Students go to class in a comfortable attire like jeans and sweats but some of that needs to stay in your closet when attending a career fair or interview.

I recently attended a career fair here at WVU and was shocked by some of the students attire. When looking for a job whether its in journalism, business, education or a medical field you must dress professionally because first impressions always stick in employers minds.

So heres some tips on how to dress accordingly to your interview or career fair:

Proper Attire for Men

- Suit (solid color – navy, grey, black)

- Matching long sleeve shirt

- Belt, tie, leather polished shoes

-Nicely trimmed hair and nails

Proper Attire for Women

- Suit/skirt (also solid color)

-Not too much make up or jewlery

-Professional blouse

-Proper shoes

-Neutral Pantyhose

What Not to Bring

- Food or Drinks

- Ipod

- Cell phone

Make sure you bring your portfolio and show up on time! Also, remember to dress to impress to grab that opportunity that is knocking on your door!

University 101 at WVU revamps their program for freshman.

All freshman need a smooth transition to the college life, there’s no doubt about that. West Virginia University first year experience program, or University 101, offers that smooth transition as 1-credit course.

It feels like yesterday I was sitting in that small classroom with quiet and shy freshman. I can’t believe its been over two years. I recently sat in a UNIV 101 class and observed the new program style the university has revamped for the course. Lets just say, I wish I had the opportunity to have a program like this when I was in enrolled in UNIV 101.

According to the university, “Our goal is to assist students in making a smooth transition to college and to provide them the best opportunity to learn about the many resources and opportunities available on campus,” as stated on the first year experience website.

Career Services (CSC) has teamed up with UNIV 101 to assist students in this course. Graduate assistants that work in CSC come into the classrooms and teach the students on how to effectively write a cover letter and resume. They also teach interviewing skills along with how to dress to impress and how to nail a job at a career fair.

Having these GA’s come in and assist the students with this knowledge encourages them to apply for internships and co-ops early in their college career. It also gives them the confidence to approach an employer when looking for an internship, co-op or even a life-long career. Training and teaching students early in their college career prepares them to the fullest extent.

Now in my third year of college, I look back wishing I had the opportunity to work with these grad students to improve my writing and interviewing skills. Although I have completed two great opportunities to have an internship I feel I would have had more confidence applying for them and interviewing for others.

So I encourage all freshman and even sophomores to get out there and learn how it’s done. CSC also offers seminars based on these topics. Everything is free to the student body, so make the most of it! Time goes by fast and you may blink and be in your senior year without a resume. Procrastination will not pay off when planning for your future and a life-long career.
